How I came to Hipness |
I am a 45 year old mother of four children. My eldest son Chris is 27, my middle son Paul is 19 and my youngest son Jay is 14. And last but not least my gorgeous baby girl Alyssa 18 months.
My eldest son Chris plays doumbek with me and for our dancers. My middle son used to play drums but has lost interest for a while; at least he has that musical background if he chooses to pick up an instrument later in life. He still loves to listen to music though. My youngest son Jay is our troupe photographer; he takes amazing photos for such a young lad with no photography lessons. He has a keen eye and having spent so much time around belly dancers knows when to take the shot. Alyssa is only 18 months and now dances with my troupe at public performances. She makes us laugh as she puts herself right at the front. I don't think she is taking any notice of the audience though as she closes her little eyes and gets right into the music. At her tiny age she already knows the music and can do a few of our choreography's in her own little way. It amazes me that one so young can take all of this in already. A little sponge. She also has her own mini doumbek; yes its a real one but kid size and she loves to play it. And what she loves most is to dance to live drums :O)
As you can see I am not only consumed with belly dancing and Middle Eastern music, but also family mad :O) |

Instrument(s): Doumbek, Riq I have been playing doumbek for about three years and have recently bought myself a good quality riq to learn. I play with my adult son who also plays doumbek as well as many other instruments such as clarinet, saxaphone, classical, acoustic and electric guitar and any other instrument you put in his hand he seems to be able to learn easily. Mostly it is Chris and myself playing together.
But we are also a part of my Drumming ensemble "Khafif" and we perform at local community events around the NW coast of Tasmania. |

Dance style(s): Cabaret, Shaabi, Folkoric, Spanish/Arabian Fusion, Bollywood I have been belly dancing since 2004 when i discovered my first belly dance class and fell in love with this beautiful art form. Completely addicted to belly dancing and learning as much as i could i was going along to 3 different teachers each week and performing with each of their different troupes whenever i could. Haflas were always fun but exhausting as i got up with each of my 3 different classes to perform our class choreographies :O)
I kept doing this each year and travelling to the mainland of Australia and within the state to learn from overseas and guest teachers.
Then in 2006 I was asked to begin teaching classes myself after having been seen performing at community events and haflas. I spoke with one of my teachers who had the most experience about this opportunity and she encouraged me to give it a go. I did and found that i really enjoyed teaching and still do to this day. Now i teach tots to teens and adults and have peforming troupes in all ages.
I also teach doumbek and began Khafif Middle Eastern Ensemble in 2007

I have been belly dancing since the age of 39. However, i have been dancing my whole life as music has always spoken to my soul. I have studied modern dance, ballroom, Jazz ballet, tap for many years and then went on to spend 12 years totally absorbed in Martial Arts until a back injury and car accident changed my life. I then found belly dancing at the age of 39 with a back and neck injury and damaged knees. Belly Dancing has been a wonderful way for me to recuperate and although I still have a back and neck injury and still have knee problems .... I now for the most part have full movement back in my spine and am able to dance, dance, dance :O)
Belly Dancing not only gave me my life back but also rebuilt my confidence after all that i had gone through. I have since had a baby girl who is now 18 months old and i credit belly dancing with remaining healthy by dancing all the way through my pregnancy and for assisting me with my back problems during labour. I now have a beautiful tiny dance partner who shares my love of Middle Eastern music and dance |
