Meet Cassandra   How I came to Hipness
Cassandra began her studies of Middle Eastern dance and music in 1974 in Minneapolis, MN, and soon re-located to San Francisco to continue her study and performing career. She returned to her hometown in 1977, and began her continuing research/study trips to the Mediterranean, seeking out dance and music wherever possible! She currently teaches and performs internationally, including the US, Europe, Morocco, Egypt, New Zealand, and Finland, and is the featured instructor as well as one of the founders of Oasis Dance Camp. Cassandra is the founder and Artistic Director of Jawaahir Dance Company, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to presenting and performing traditional and contemporary Middle Eastern dance. Her teaching style is musical, energetic, concise, challenging, and slyly humorous. Cassandra Shore began performing Middle Eastern dance in 1975 and has since made over a twenty research trips to the Middle East. Her serious studies began in San Francisco with the legendary performer, Jamila Salimpour. In addition, she has studied with some of the finest teachers and choreographers of Middle Eastern dance, notably including Mahmoud Reda, Mohammed Khalil, Vivian Hamamjian, Ragia Hassan, and the late Ibrahim Farrah. In 1978, Ms. Shore opened the Cassandra School, which offers classes in technique, choreography, performance skills, dance conditioning, and Arabic culture studies. In 1989, she formed Jawaahir Dance Company, which has since been recognized for its ground-breaking repertory of traditional, modern and fusion works of Middle Eastern and contemporary dance. Today, Cassandra is known as a master teacher, star performer, and creative artist in the field of Middle Eastern dance. Her work has been rewarded with grants, commissions and awards. She regularly offers workshops, concerts and master classes worldwide, teaching and performing regularly in locations such as Cairo, Egypt, Marrakesh, Morocco, as well as Finland, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, New Zealand, and throughout the United States and Canada.
 
Teacher
The Cassandra School offers year-round classes in the art of Middle Eastern dance for levels ranging from beginning to professional. Started by Cassandra in 1978, the school now serves as the teaching arm of Jawaahir Dance Company. Classes are offered at three locations and include special classes that incorporate all relevant aspects of Middle Eastern dance, music, and culture. The regular classes serve the seven-county metro area and are sought by students from across the United States. Many dancers from around the country have relocated expressly to study with Cassandra at the school.
